Engineering to Enhance Ocean Exploration
Background
SKEG assisted a mining company to extend the life of their remotely operated vehicle (RoV) fleet by manufacturing an entire RoV for use in exploring deep sea mining.
The project involved a thorough end-to-end manufacturing process which included all key components.
SKEG designed and fabricated a sturdy stainless steel frame with certified welding and tolerances.
A lightweight and durable body panel was constructed using an infusion technique.
High-performance titanium servo and gearboxes were designed and manufactured to be integrated for precise control, along with phosphor bronze propellers to provide efficient propulsion.
Ducted propeller housing with steering mechanisms was also designed, manufactured and installed for maneuverability, and a drive mechanism was implemented to power the RoV.
To maintain optimal depth at 100 meters, buoyancy blocks were integrated, and adjustable weights were used to ensure balance and neutral buoyancy.
Finally, the ROV underwent thorough assembly and integration of all components to create a fully functional and reliable underwater vehicle.
